Moving in Tubac Adobe Homes: Things are different here

Thick adobe walls and doorways that just barely fit the average dresser corner are a part of Tubac life. We've worked in plenty of these homes along Tubac Road and its side streets on the Plaza Road side. Adobe homes require a different method than your typical suburban style houses. Here is what Tubac adobe homes are different for moving:

  • Doorframes in adobe homes are sometimes not the standard widths and sometimes are too narrow. You may need to take measurements of furniture for the move
  • Saltillo tile floors scratch easily under heavy loads, requiring floor protection on every path from room to truck
  • There might not be enough space to carry your pieces of furniture around your corners if they are armoires or hutches or something else large because of the way Tubac homes are designed with the courtyards and walled entrances
  • Tubac has a lot of dirt and gravel driveways where you have to be more careful when you park the truck

This is the general situation I just described, a family is moving from their home near the Tubac Presidio. There are pieces of art that they have collected over the years, and maybe they have lived in their Tubac home for 15 years and now they want to downsize. They're not concerned about the distance to their Tubac home on their move. They are worried about moving out of their Tubac adobe home because they don't want to damage the walls of the Tubac adobe home they have loved for many years. That is what gets us a five-star rating on Google.

We do not move a piece of your furniture unless it is blanketed wrapped and padded. It is important that the floors and the doorways be padded to prevent any accidents from happening. It is also our responsibility to do a walk-through before the movers arrive to identify any areas to be more careful around and to see what is going to happen if anything gets stuck while we are carrying it out the doors. We also know how to pack and move antiques and art, which are very popular in many Tubac homes. For art and antiques common in Tubac homes, we use specialty packing methods that protect frames, glass, and delicate surfaces during transport.

Most moves in Tubac are completed in one day. That is one moving team, one moving truck, and a smooth move. No subcontractors who have never moved in a Tubac home will be brought in to help you. The crew that moved your art was the crew that unloaded your art.

This is what the community in Tubac appreciates most. If we give you a quoted price for your move, then that is the price you pay. We offer flat-rate pricing so there are no additional trip fees or surprise prices. Sometimes a Tubac move takes longer because a courtyard gate was too small or another unexpected issue occurred. This is something we expect and factor into your moving estimate when it is initially made.

Because Tubac attracts the artist and craftsman, it is only appropriate to move your Tubac home with the same attention to detail that these people are known for. We are a locally owned and operated company that is insured and we are proud to do Tubac house moves! When you call us, you will talk to a real mover with real experience, not a sales person in an office. Seniors in the Tubac area are eligible for community discounts. There's enough sadness when leaving an old house for so long, we don't want the stress of pricing issues to add fuel to the fire.

How Our Crew Gets to the Tubac Presidio Area

From our Green Valley office located at 101 S La Cañada Dr, we take I-19 directly south until we're there, it's a straight shot. Here's the route we follow.

  • We leave our office in Green Valley and merge onto I-19 south.
  • Our crew passes the Canoa Ranch exit and the open expanse of grass and mesquite between Green Valley and Tubac.
  • We exit the highway via Exit 34 onto Tubac Road, heading east.
  • A quick right onto Tubac Road leads us past the Tubac Golf Resort and into the village center.
  • Finally, our drivers follow Presidio Drive or Burruel Street to reach homes in the Tubac Presidio area.

This is a quick drive. Door to door, we're looking at about 20 minutes. And since I-19 almost never has back-up traffic in this section of the Tucson metro area, that is rarely added to the drive. We make this trip often. In fact, sometimes we make the trip two times in a day, during snowbird season when we're moving folks to their winter homes in the Presidio area.

Streets near the Tubac Presidio can be narrow. Burruel Street and others in the village near the Presidio were not designed with moving trucks in mind. These are details you only learn by working here.

But, more importantly, since our office is located in Green Valley, you don't have to pay a trip fee to have us drive out here. While others are adding to your bill before we pick up your first piece of furniture, we simply include everything in our flat rate quote, meaning that's what your bill will show. No surprises.

In addition, Tubac village has its share of unpaved roads, or those shared driveways located by the Santa Cruz River. We're used to loading our trucks off dusty caliche in July heat, and moving art through doorways of casitas not much larger than your sofa. And every move to a home in Tubac, there are some unique details, and every time we schedule a move, we consider every detail before we even leave Green Valley.

Does this require that we pick you up earlier than the afternoon heat makes you uncomfortable? We'll make that work. Or, do you have time to take your morning walk along the Anza Trail? No worries, we make time for that. You'll even find, we provide this service as an actual service, and it's not just something we post on our website.

A real person will be on the other end when you call, someone who has experience with moving and knows the Tubac area, not someone reading from a script and giving your details to any of three other businesses. We're the same moving company, same truck, the same people, from your Tubac Presidio home to your new one.

Whether you're moving close to or near Tubac Presidio State Historic Park, our office in Green Valley is near you. Call us at (928) 832-6683 or fill out an online request form for a free moving quote. We'll have a quote ready fast, usually the same day.

What Moving to Tubac's Historic District Is Like

Adobe walls will not forgive clumsy movers. The first lesson learned when working in Tubac's historic district, where thick adobe buildings, narrow doorways and unique artisan touches are the norm, is that a standard mover from Tucson is probably not going to know that. We do know. We are in Tubac all the time. Tubac is a small artist colony with a large reputation. Situated at the core of the historic district, is the Tubac Presidio State Historic Park, with the main area extending up Tubac Road. Homes in Tubac are not built off the shelf. Some have adobe walls with rounded corners. Others have custom tile and saltillo floors and art worthy of any gallery in the room. A move from one of these homes needs patience and a level of care that a standard mover doesn't normally do. This is different in a move from one of these homes to another place:

  • Doorways may be narrow and courtyards may be a part of the layout, which means a piece of furniture may need to be maneuvered carefully through smaller doorways
  • Art, sculpture and antiques may need to be moved by hand with extra care and wrapping
  • Driveways may be gravel and roadways may not be paved, which limits the type of truck and how close it can get to your front door
  • Tubac's summer heat may warp wood and damage items left in a truck

All of these things to prepare for. We bring extra padding to move art. We learn how to protect saltillo tile from scuffs when sliding heavy furniture across it. We come at times of day that keep the sun out of your items when the temperature is nearing 110 degrees in a truck. Tubac is a popular retirement destination for snowbirds and summer renters, and seasonal moving services is a big part of Tubac and Southern Arizona. Maybe you divide your time here and in a northern state, and you need a mover that will be on time with your things and not rip you off with a price that changes the day of the move. We provide a flat rate for moving services here, and you will always pay that price with no surprises. A lot of folks in the historic district and surrounding areas are also downsizing. We have a long list of clients who have moved from large homes along Camino de las Flores or off of Burruel Street into smaller homes closer to the heart of the village of Tubac. Senior moving services in this village means moving at the pace of a senior and moving everything with labels. We treat every home like it matters, because it does. But what makes Tubac so different from other villages and homes is the art. The community has over 100 art galleries, studios, and shops. Many Tubac homes have art and antiques that are of a higher value than their price. Piano, antique and fine art, heavy item moving are some of the most requested services we do in Tubac. Our crew is insured and our trucks are always fully stocked. One crew and one truck do not get transfers or stops in a warehouse. They take your items from your Tubac home directly to their location. This is how we do our Tubac direct-move moves, because they need to be handled with care when so many people trust us with the most valuable possessions they have owned. We do long distance direct moves the same way. We are a five-star rating on Google for doing what we do, with no moving from job to job. For example, spending an extra 10 minutes wrapping up a bronze statue in the proper way. Calling you the same day after you reached out to us for help. We have people that work for us that answer the phone, not a call center. Neighbors in Rio Rico get the same care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Tubac in Green Valley

How fast can your crew reach a home near the Tubac Presidio?

About 20 minutes door to door from our Green Valley office. We take I-19 south, exit onto Tubac Road, and follow Presidio Drive or Burruel Street into the village. Traffic on I-19 rarely backs up here, so that drive time stays steady. During snowbird season we sometimes make this trip twice in one day.

Do adobe homes near the Presidio need special handling during a move?

Yes, adobe homes need extra care most movers overlook. Doorframes are often narrower than standard, and Saltillo tile floors scratch easily under heavy furniture. We measure large pieces like armoires ahead of time and pad every path from room to truck. A walk-through before loading helps us catch tight courtyard gates or walled entrances first.

Can you schedule around narrow streets and heat near the Presidio?

Yes, we plan every Tubac move around local conditions like this. Streets such as Burruel are narrow and weren't built for moving trucks, and some driveways near the Presidio are unpaved. We can start earlier to beat July heat, or work around your morning walk on the Anza Trail. These details get factored in before we ever leave Green Valley.
