Some things in your house can't be moved like a couch: a 600-pound gun safe, a baby grand, a hot tub behind a narrow gate, a home gym, a painting you can't replace. We move heavy and specialty items across Tucson with the right crew size and equipment for each one. A standalone heavy item move with our truck usually runs $547 to $797, and once we've seen the item and the path, the flat rate we quote is the price you pay.

What Counts as a Heavy or Specialty Item Move

Is there something in your home you dread moving? A 400-pound gun safe bolted to the garage floor? An upright piano that's been in the family for generations? That's a specialty item, and it doesn't move the way a dresser does.

In Tucson, specialty items aren't just "heavy stuff." They need extra equipment, extra hands, or special handling because of their weight, their shape, their value, or parts that break easily. We move them all the time:

Each one brings its own challenges. A gun safe on the second floor of a Catalina Foothills home takes real planning. A hot tub in a backyard with a narrow gate? We've done plenty. The item people worry about most is often the one we handle most smoothly, because it's what we plan for.

Here's something many people don't know: some movers won't take specialty items at all. They show up, see a 700-pound safe, and tell you it isn't included. That's why it pays to ask up front. When you call us, a real mover answers and asks about the weight, the stairs, the doorways, and the path. Once we've seen the item, your flat rate is locked, with no trip fee and no "we didn't know about that" on moving day.

If it's big, oddly shaped, heavy, or irreplaceable, it's a specialty item, and we plan for it before we show up.

What Heavy and Specialty Item Moving Costs

Most heavy and specialty item moves run $347 to $797:

  • Standalone move with our truck: $547 to $797 for most items. This is one heavy item going from your home to another address.
  • Same property, no truck: $347 to $647, like a gun safe moving from the garage to a back bedroom or a treadmill going upstairs. Crew size sets the number.
  • Part of a bigger move we're already doing: it's built into your move quote and costs less, usually adding $247 to $647 per item, because the crew, truck, and equipment are already there.
  • Your own truck or trailer: no truck charge. Our labor-only rate starts at $347 for the first 2 hours, and it goes up if the item needs more movers.

Some items work a little differently. Antique and art pieces that don't need crating move at our standard rate, and custom crating is quoted on its own. Piano removal and hot tub haul-aways are priced case by case.

Five hundred dollars to move one object can look steep on paper. But a 600-pound gun safe going down a flight of stairs takes four movers, a heavy-duty dolly and straps, and a plan, and doing it wrong costs a lot more than doing it right. After 20 years of this work, the jobs that go sideways are almost always the ones someone tried to shortcut with a rental dolly and a couple of friends.

And if your item is small enough for two people and a rented dolly, with no stairs, you may not need us at all. We'd rather tell you that than sell you a job you can handle yourself on a Saturday. Call, and we'll tell you which it is.

What Moves the Price Up or Down

  • The size and weight of the item. Weight sets the crew size, and crew size is the biggest single factor. A 400-pound safe and a 900-pound safe are different jobs.
  • Stairs. Every flight adds time and people, and a tight turn at a landing can add more work than an extra hundred pounds.
  • Doorways and gates. If an item barely clears, we plan for door removal and extra protection. If it doesn't clear at all, we talk about it before moving day, not on it.
  • The surface and the path, like 40 feet of gravel, a desert landscape yard, step-downs, raised patios, retaining walls, or a long carry from the back patio to the street.
  • Truck or no truck. Moving to another address needs a truck. Moving within the same house doesn't, so it costs less.
  • Standalone or part of a bigger move. Bundling it with a full move is the easiest way to spend less.

A hot tub that crosses a gravel yard and has to go over a block wall is the clearest example. Same tub, same weight, but the yard decides whether it's a two-person job or a four-person job with plywood laid down. Photos tell us that in about a minute. A phone description usually doesn't.

So we look first. Send photos or a short video of the item and the path, or we'll come see it in person. Both are free. Once we've seen it, the price we quote is the price you pay. Add an item or a service later, and we update the quote and tell you the new number before we do the work. If you'd rather not send photos or schedule a visit, we can work hourly instead.

Our first number can look higher than a quote someone gave over the phone in ninety seconds. Ours includes the right crew size, the straps, the blankets, and the protection the item needs, and it holds. Customers often end up paying the same or less than the low phone quote.

What's Included, and What Isn't

Your quote covers:

  • The right number of movers for the weight and the path, not the smallest crew we can get away with
  • Equipment sized to the item, like dollies, straps, and lifting gear
  • Moving blankets and stretch wrap to protect the item and your home, plus specialty TV boxes and custom boxing for mirrors and artwork on a flat-rate quote (on an hourly job, they're added as supplies)
  • A designated loader who builds and secures the load with ratchet straps so nothing shifts
  • Placement where you want it at the other end, and a final walkthrough with the crew before we leave

There's no trip fee or call-out charge, because truck and travel are built into the 2-hour minimum or the flat rate. Last-minute, weekend, and holiday moves cost the same as any other day. A Saturday gun safe costs the same as a Tuesday gun safe.

Not included:

  • Disconnecting or reconnecting gas, water, or electrical lines. That's on the homeowner before we arrive.
  • Unpacking boxes, which is an added service on request
  • Hazardous materials, which we don't move at all
  • General junk like bags of trash, yard waste, or tree trimmings. We do haul away old furniture and appliances, and we handle donation drop-offs, so if the new hot tub is going where the old one sat, ask about the old one.

Our quote doesn't include full-value coverage on the item. If something gets damaged, our first step is to repair it. If it can't be repaired, we reimburse at the industry-standard 60 cents per pound per article, which is $60 on a 100-pound item. For a high-value safe or a family piece, some people carry their own coverage, and it's worth checking before moving day.

The Right Equipment for Safes, Pianos, and Hot Tubs

A 900-pound gun safe doesn't move like a baby grand, and a hot tub is a different job altogether. A lot of people assume movers use the same dolly for everything, and that's how floors and backs get broken. Each item needs its own equipment and a crew that knows how to use it:

  • Gun safes need a heavy-duty dolly rated for the weight, straps that spread the load across the frame, and plywood when tile or hardwood needs protection. The safes we move typically run 500 to 1,200 pounds. You don't wing it.
  • Pianos need a piano board, locking casters, and heavy padding on every exposed surface. A grand has to be tipped onto its side at the right angle. One wrong move can crack the soundboard or snap a leg.
  • Hot tubs need a different approach entirely. They're wide, they're usually on a back patio, and the only way out is often a narrow gate. In older neighborhoods like Sam Hughes, tight side yards need to be checked ahead of time.
  • Trucks vary by job, too. Most items go up a ramp into a regular moving truck. An extremely large, heavy safe may call for a liftgate truck, and when it does, we arrange it and include it in your quote.

The crew should know what's going on the truck before they leave. We don't make decisions in your driveway. We load the right equipment based on your estimate, so there's no trial and error and no trips back for a missing tool. We've carried gun safes down spiral staircases, pianos out of second-floor studios, and hot tubs through yards with barely enough room to squeeze by. The right gear made the difference every time, along with a crew that knows how to use it on your piece.

Labor-Only or Full-Service?

Say you have a 700-pound gun safe and no idea how to get it from the garage onto a truck. Before you call, it helps to know you have options, and the right one depends on your situation.

When Labor-Only Makes Sense

You've already rented a truck, or a PODS container is sitting in your driveway. You just need a crew to load the heavy pieces, unload them at the other end, or both. Our labor-only crew does the lifting, and you handle the driving. We do this a lot for people moving into smaller places who have the transportation covered and just need help getting a 400-pound treadmill down a flight of stairs. It's a good fit when you need help with one or two big pieces and you're handling the rest. If you're renting a truck, our U-Haul loading and unloading crew can pack it right.

When Full-Service Is the Better Choice

If you have several heavy items, stairs, or narrow doorways, or you'd simply rather hand off the whole job, go full-service. We bring the truck, the equipment, the padding, and the crew, and you deal with one company from start to finish. Full-service usually makes sense if:

  • You have three or more heavy items moving the same day
  • Items have to go up or down stairs, through narrow hallways, or around tight turns
  • You don't have a truck big enough for the item
  • You want your floors and walls protected along the way

Whichever you choose, the price we quote after seeing the job is the price you pay, with no trip fee. We often hear from people whose mover quoted over the phone and then raised the price on site after seeing the item. Not sure which fits? Call. If labor-only is the better choice, we'll tell you, and you'll save money.

Get Your House Ready Before We Arrive

A little prep makes heavy item moves faster, and faster means less labor time. Walk the path from the item to the door and look for:

  • Anything on the floor, like shoes, pet toys, or rugs
  • Narrow doorways where a door could come off its hinges
  • Tight hallway turns where artwork should come off the wall first
  • Steps and thresholds that need to be clear and easy to see

We once had a 700-pound gun safe in a back bedroom with several pieces of furniture in the hall between it and the front door. Not a big deal, but clearing the way ahead of time saves labor hours, and that saves you money.

Older neighborhoods like Sam Hughes and Barrio Viejo also tend to have narrower doorways than newer homes. Measure them. We can work in tight spaces, but if we know the measurements ahead of time, we'll bring the right equipment on the first trip.

What About the Driveway and Yard?

Think about where the truck will park, and trim any branches that might be in the way. Move trash cans, toys, and patio furniture out of the path, and sweep away loose gravel near the entry. Nobody wants to roll a 500-pound appliance over shifting rock.

Then there's the Arizona summer. If something's coming out of a garage in July, the heat off the concrete is brutal, so open the garage door ahead of time and run a fan if you can.

If an item needs to be disconnected, like a washer or a gas dryer, take care of that before we arrive. We move appliances, but we don't unhook water or gas lines. If it just needs to be unplugged from a wall outlet, we can do that.

Still have questions about prep? Call, and we'll walk you through it with your free estimate.

How a Heavy or Specialty Item Move Works

Maybe it's a 700-pound gun safe in a Catalina Foothills home with narrow halls, or an upright piano that hasn't moved in 15 years. Either way, here's what happens when you call:

  1. Tell us what you have. You'll talk to someone with real moving experience, not a script. We ask about the item, the layout, and any obstacles on the way out. Then we look at photos, a video, or the item in person and give you a flat rate.
  2. We map the path. We measure entries, doorways, and stairways before we lift anything. Many older two-story homes in midtown have narrow stairs, so we work out the best angles ahead of time. Floor and wall protection go down when required.
  3. We bring the right tools. Heavy item moving isn't just muscle. We bring the dollies and equipment that safes, pianos, hot tubs, appliances, and fitness equipment each need.
  4. We move it carefully. The crew communicates the whole way, stays steady, and keeps the item off your walls and floors. It ends up exactly where you want it.
  5. We stay until it's done. We don't leave until it's set and you're happy with how it looks.

Most people are surprised it isn't a big, drawn-out ordeal. We've been moving heavy items around Tucson for eight years, and our crew brings over 20 years of moving experience. There's no trip charge and no moving-day price change: we give you our number, and you pay our number. We're insured and locally family-owned, and after-hours moves are possible when our schedule allows.

Confirming Your Item Arrived Safe and Level

Setting the item down isn't the end of the job. After it's in place, we look it over with you, right there in the room. Too often, people find a scratch or a ding two hours after a crew leaves. We'd rather find it together.

What We Check Before We Leave

It only takes a few minutes, but it makes a big difference. On every delivery, we:

  • Check every side of the item for scratches, dings, or finish damage, and compare it with how it looked before the move
  • Make sure it's level and solid, whether it's a gun safe, a hot tub, or a piece of gym equipment
  • Make sure it's exactly where you wanted it. Not close. Exactly.
  • Put back any parts we removed for the move
  • Get your okay before we pack up our gear

For appliances, we show you that the hookups are accessible for whoever connects them. For fitness equipment, we show you the bolts are tight and the unit isn't rocking or off level.

If something isn't right, we deal with it on the spot, and if anything was damaged, our first step is to repair it. You shouldn't have to chase down a moving company afterward. That's part of the No Hassle Promise: we don't leave until you've checked everything. We're insured, we document everything, and we stand behind our crew. Want us to take a look at your item? Call for a free estimate.

Deposit, Financing & Discounts

A deposit, typically $150 for most local and specialty-item jobs, holds your date, your arrival window, and your crew. It comes straight off your final bill, so it isn't an extra fee. Larger or packing-heavy moves take a bigger deposit.

Financing is available if a $547 safe move or a $797 hot tub move isn't something you want to cover all at once. Plenty of people don't plan for a piano or a safe until the moving week arrives. And if you have a full move coming up soon, timing the heavy item with it is usually the cheaper route.

Military members, veterans, first responders, healthcare workers, teachers, seniors, and students can ask about our community discounts. Need it done fast? Our last-minute moves cost the same. Moving a whole houseful of valuables? Our white glove moving is built for that.

Lifting heavy items wrong is one of the most common ways people get hurt at home and at work. If you're curious, OSHA's guidance on lifting and ergonomics shows why technique and crew size matter. We move heavy items all over Tucson, from the Catalina Foothills to Oro Valley and Marana. At No Hassle Movers, we look first and quote what the job takes. Here's how we price every move.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to move a heavy or specialty item in Tucson?

Most heavy and specialty item moves run $347 to $797. A standalone move with our truck is usually $547 to $797, moving an item within the same property with no truck is $347 to $647, and adding it to a bigger move usually adds $247 to $647 to that move quote. With your own truck, there's no truck charge, and our labor rate starts at $347.

How do I know if I need labor-only help or a full-service move?

Labor-only fits if you already have a truck and just need lifting for one or two heavy items. Full-service is better if you have three or more heavy pieces, stairs, or narrow hallways. Call, and we'll tell you honestly which one fits your move.

Do you really need special equipment to move a piano or gun safe?

Yes. A gun safe needs a heavy-duty dolly and straps that spread the load. A piano needs a piano board and locking casters. Hot tubs need a different setup for tight side yards. We load the right equipment before we leave, so there's no guessing in your driveway.

Will movers refuse to move my gun safe or hot tub?

Some will, and it catches a lot of people off guard on moving day. A crew shows up, sees a 700-pound safe, and says it isn't included. We ask about weight, stairs, and doorways during your free estimate, so we plan for it ahead of time.

Can heavy items be moved up or down stairs safely?

Yes. We move safes, pianos, and other heavy items up and down stairs in Tucson homes, including multi-level homes in the foothills. We use straps and extra crew members to control the weight the whole way, and we plan the path before lifting. Tell us about stairs ahead of time so we bring the right equipment.

Do you charge extra if my item is hard to get to?

It's part of the same price range, not a separate fee. Tight doorways, gates, and awkward paths are part of what we look at in your photos or in person. A harder path can push you toward the higher end of the range, and you'll know that before you book.

Will you give me a firm price over the phone?

Not without seeing the item. A number guessed from a description tends to change on moving day. Photos or a short video usually do it, or we can come see it in person. Once we've seen it, the flat rate is locked. If you'd rather not send anything, we can work hourly.

How soon can I book a heavy item move?

Most heavy item moves can be scheduled within a few days, sometimes sooner. We ask a few questions about the item so we send the right crew and equipment the first time. Last-minute moves cost the same, and calling early gives you more choice of times.
