How Moves Work for Student Apartments and Rentals

Students dominate the housing market surrounding the University of Arizona; it isn't a prediction, it is fact. This reality informs virtually every move in the area.

Most of our customers are relocating into or out of local apartments: studio-style spaces on Tyndall Avenue, shared flats on Euclid or older duplexes to the south of Speedway. This isn't moving into a house with a spacious two-car garage. There are narrow hallways, restricted staircases, and tiny doorways everywhere.

We see and handle apartment moves and small moves near the University of Arizona all the time. Our process is slightly different than a traditional move for the following reasons:

  • Tight move-in/move-out windows (with little wiggle room) enforced by the property manager
  • Elevator buildings with heavy competition for elevator use from 5-10 other apartments
  • No parking for our trucks on Highland or Park Avenue (by the time 9 am rolls around in the semester)
  • Second or third floor walk-ups that don't have any elevators
  • Move-in/move-out days that fall at the beginning of August and mid-January

The neighborhood skews very young, largely students. It's a student neighborhood. Students move a lot.

A common occurrence for us in the summer is a senior moving out of a shared apartment near the university on 6th Street. They have one piece of furniture, a futon, a bookshelf they put together by themselves, and a few boxes from a 13-foot truck. The first apartment has them out at noon, and the second one has them in at 2 p.m. We come on time and are done by 2 p.m. One crew, one truck, one smooth move. A good local move near the University of Arizona is typically done in one day.

The real tension point is timing; you won't get the option of moving in a day or two early. That's why we offer after-hours and same-day moves when our schedule allows. Someone will speak with you (a real person, not a sales rep) to see if we can accommodate you.

We also offer loading-only and labor-only moves if the tenant is renting their own truck or has a PODS rental. You do the packing, you have the rental unit, we do the loading. It's and it spares your back. All of our labor-only and loading services are flat-rate, too. Whatever we say it's going to cost, that's what you'll pay. You won't be hit with additional charges when moving a piano takes you an extra 20 minutes due to a slow elevator.

Helping people assemble their furniture is very popular here. You move into a new apartment and you haven't bought your tools yet, so you make one last trip to IKEA. We'll help you put together those pieces from your latest purchase and you won't start your first week of school sleeping on a mattress on the floor.

If you're a parent trying to get your student situated near the University of Arizona, you don't have to make a three-day flying trip to carry boxes up three flights of stairs in the August heat. We're an insured, locally family owned mover with a five-star rating on Google from people in your situation and we offer student pricing, so you'll receive a fair rate.

Contact us by calling (928) 832-6683, or request an estimate on our website today. Let us get you moved and settled before your first class of the semester.

How We Reach the University of Arizona Area

We're based out of our office at 3430 E Sunrise Dr in the Catalina Foothills. The move is a straight shot south from there and we make this run quite frequently.

Typically this is the route our crew would take:

  • Begin by heading south on N Campbell Ave from Sunrise Dr.
  • Remain on Campbell Ave as it continues through the Catalina Foothills, passing River Rd and Grant Rd, then eventually speeding by Speedway Blvd.
  • Keep going south on Campbell until you reach the campus vicinity near E University Blvd.
  • Take an eastward or westward route depending upon where you're picking up, or dropping off the load (this could include a rental by Park Ave or a destination off 6th St).

On an ideal day, that trip would take around 20 minutes. During the school year, you'll likely hit more traffic, especially along Speedway and the intersection near Old Main. We take this into account and will try to use side streets that allow us to avoid waiting at the light on Campbell and University.

Parking in the UA area is always a challenge. There are tons of residential housing between Euclid Ave and Tucson Blvd. Narrow lots. Rows of cars bumper to bumper. We've had to deal with this every time the school year starts up in August, with the arrival of new students and the lease endings in May. where to park our vehicles without taking up the entire road, or parking in front of your neighbor's house so we won't get their driveway blocked, or stuck behind a U-Haul rental on 3rd Street.

Rentals are the most common residence near campus. This means that we deal with plenty of apartment moves, second floor walkups and homes that don't have an elevator. We have the equipment needed to move your goods up the stairs. We do less frequent local jobs here as well, like moving a professor from one of the old University of Arizona single family homes near Sam Hughes to a graduate student who is moving from a house on Elm St to somewhere else. University of Arizona housing has a unique blend of mid-century homes built in the 60s and newer student housing buildings. Some of the older single family residential rentals in the area have some tricky doorways and hallway configurations, and you can be sure what pieces need to be dismantled when you move into one of those homes. The University of Arizona offers the advantage of evening hours for our moving services when our schedule allows because it is very common that our students are moving before 8 AM or have their only access to the new place from 5 PM on. We are happy to answer the phone to answer any questions you have. Most of the moves we take around University of Arizona are smaller moves and apartment moving jobs, so small moves and apartment moving is a big part of how we serve here. It means one crew, one truck, finished in a few hours, a price you can count on, no trip fee, and no last minute surprises after you've spent hours moving. We are also part of our community discount program, so University of Arizona students receive a discount. University of Arizona is surrounded by apartments. This is the only fact you really need to know in order to understand how the housing market around this neighborhood moves: it revolves around the lease cycle and the fact that August and May are peak moving months. In and around University of Arizona you have the following kinds of apartments: a) small bungalows split into two family duplexes along the old main streets Drachman and Adams b) low rise apartment buildings with narrow staircases and small parking lots c) old single family homes near Speedway that have been converted into two, three or four family units d) newer student housing along Tyndall Avenue with a mix of freight elevators (that may or may not work on move in day). We are always in and out of these buildings.

What we see every August is a graduate student renting a second-floor apartment across from Campbell and Sixth Street. You have a futon. You have a desk. Maybe a bookshelf you picked up on Grant in downtown Tucson. It is not a large move, yet your stairs are too tight. Your parking lot is jammed up with people also moving in. Outside is 105 degrees. The friend you called with a truck backed out. And then there are two days left before classes begin. At this point you call us, which is what we do with our small moves and apartment moving services. One crew. One truck. Done within a couple hours.

The area skews very young.6 years. In other words, we are helping a majority of people who are students or recent graduates who might be moving for the very first time. You have little idea what to expect, nothing is known in relation to costs, and you have heard the horror stories of movers who fail to show up or nickel and dime you at the end of the day. So, here is what we do. Our flat rate quotes are guaranteed and final. The amount we give you is what you will pay. There is no trip fee. There are no surprises.

Additionally, renters often need to be more concerned about damage to walls, door frames and floors than homeowners typically do. The landlord will not return your deposit if you damage the hallways or other common areas. Our small moving crew can protect these delicate spaces within our apartments. We have moved people out of Park Avenue apartments in Tucson where doorways were too narrow to get a couch through sideways.

This is not the only type of tenant. Some students at the University of Arizona have been renting apartments in the area, as have faculty, staff, and young families in the Sam Hughes neighborhood just east of the school, who have heavier things to move, including appliance moving, heavy furniture, etc. Our local moving business sees constant turnover in rental units and older construction nearby, and this is not a move we do exclusively every August.

We also offer PODS loading and unloading services as well as U-Haul moving container loading and unloading services, often requested by a person who rented a container but does not want to move the entire container on their own during July. It is very typical here.

If you are moving in or out near the University of Arizona area, you need movers in the vicinity who are aware of the leasing restrictions, one-way traffic routes and other parking regulations. And you need a service that visits all areas each week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about University of Arizona in Tucson

How fast can you get a crew to my apartment near the University of Arizona?

We're about 20 minutes away on a normal day, heading straight down Campbell Ave from our Catalina Foothills office. During the school year, traffic near Speedway and Old Main can slow us down, so we plan around it and use side streets when needed. We move around campus often, so we know the fastest paths in and out.

Do older homes near the University of Arizona need special handling during a move?

Yes, many homes in this area date back to the 1960s and have narrow hallways, tight staircases, and doorways that weren't built for modern furniture. Only about 35% of housing here is single-family, so we often disassemble larger pieces before moving them out. Our crews are used to these tricky layouts and come prepared with the right tools.

How do you handle moving day when most apartments near campus are rentals with shared access?

Since over 90% of housing near the University of Arizona is renter-occupied, we're used to coordinating around tight move-in and move-out windows set by property managers. We plan for elevator competition, limited parking on streets like Highland and Park, and second-floor walk-ups without elevators. Booking early helps us secure the smoothest timing for your building.
