A gun safe is usually the heaviest thing in the house, and it's built to be hard to move. We move residential gun safes and commercial safes across Tucson with the crew size and equipment each one needs. Moving a safe to a new address with our truck is typically $547 to $797, and after we've looked at the safe and its route, your flat rate is locked.
Signs You Need Professional Gun Safe Movers
You've been eyeing that safe in the corner, wondering how it's ever getting out the door. Maybe you're moving to a new house near Sabino Canyon and the safe has to come with you. Or maybe you bought a bigger safe and the old one has to come out to free up a room.
You already know this isn't a job for a couple of friends and a furniture dolly. Here are the signs it's time to call gun safe movers:
- Your safe weighs more than 300 pounds. Most residential gun safes run 300 to 1,500 pounds, and some weigh more. You can't muscle that through a doorway.
- There are stairs involved, going in or coming out. A half-ton steel box on a staircase is dangerous.
- The floor is tile, hardwood, or stamped concrete. A safe that catches on a step can ruin a floor fast.
- The doorways and hallways are tight. We see this all the time in older Tucson homes, where a hallway can be 30 inches wide and the safe is 28.
- You have to move it in the heat. On the worst July afternoons the air can top 110, and fighting a 700-pound safe in that heat is asking for trouble.
The biggest sign of all is that you've already started and it isn't going well. Maybe the safe got halfway across the garage on a dolly before the balance started to go. Maybe someone tweaked their back before you reached the entryway. We get those calls often. Someone started the job, something went wrong, and now they need help.
There's no shame in calling. We're insured, we bring the heavy-duty dollies and straps a safe needs, and we've been moving heavy items around Tucson for over eight years. Our quote holds, and there's no trip fee. That's part of our No Hassle Promise.
What Gun Safe Moving Costs in Tucson
Nearly every gun safe job we do falls between $347 and $797. There are three versions:
- New address, our truck: $547 to $797 for most safes.
- Staying on the same property: $347 to $647. Garage to bedroom, bedroom to closet, upstairs to down. Crew size is what moves you around in that range.
- Riding along with your household move: the safe goes into your overall move quote and costs less than a standalone job, usually adding $247 to $647, since we're already there with the crew and the truck.
Got your own truck or trailer? There's no truck charge. Our labor-only rate starts at $347 for the first 2 hours, and it goes up if the safe's weight or the route calls for extra movers.
We publish these numbers because a gun safe is one of the heaviest things you own, and you should know the range before you pick up the phone.
What Moves the Price Up or Down
- The size and weight of the safe, which sets how many movers we send
- Stairs, in either direction, at either end
- Doorway and gate widths along the route
- The path itself, like gravel, grass, a long driveway, or a tight turn at a landing
- Whether a truck is needed, or the safe is staying on the same property
Weight is the first question we ask, and crew size follows from it. A 400-pound safe and a 1,200-pound safe are two different jobs. A safe rolling across a flat garage floor to the truck sits near the bottom of the range. A 1,200-pound safe that has to come down a flight of stairs and then cross gravel lands at the high end.
Paths are where safe jobs get hard, and a description doesn't always match what we find. A doorway that sounds wide enough, a turn at the top of the stairs, a stretch of gravel between the gate and the driveway. That's why we see it before we price it. A few photos, a quick video, or a free visit all work. After that, your flat rate is guaranteed. Decide to add something later? You'll get the updated number before the crew touches it. Prefer not to share photos or schedule a look? Hourly works, too.
A quick quote from someone who never saw the safe can look lower than ours at first. Ours doesn't move. Plenty of customers pay the same or less in the end, because the right-size crew showed up the first time.
What's Included, and What Isn't
Here's what your price covers:
- The right number of movers for the weight
- The dollies, straps, and gear that move a safe safely, plus blankets and stretch wrap to protect the safe and your home
- The truck and the travel, with no trip fee and no charge for the drive
- Placement in the room you want, not just inside the door
- A walkthrough with the crew before we leave, so you can look everything over
Booking on short notice, on a Saturday, or on a holiday doesn't raise the price.
A few things aren't part of the move, and we'd rather tell you now:
- Anything inside the safe. Empty it before we arrive. We move the safe, not the contents.
- Bolting the safe down at the new spot or drilling into a slab. We'll place it exactly where you want it so it's ready to bolt, but the bolting itself isn't part of the move.
- Structural work. If the floor at the new spot can't hold the weight, that's a call for a contractor.
- Junk removal and hazardous materials. We'll haul away an old table or bed and handle donation drop-offs, but we don't take trash, yard waste, or hazardous materials.
Here's how damage works, so there's no guessing later. If something gets damaged, we repair it first. If it can't be repaired, we reimburse at the industry-standard 60 cents per pound per article. On a 100-pound item, that's $60. It's better to know that before you book than after.
Choosing the Right Equipment for a Heavy Safe Move
A lot of movers show up to a gun safe with a standard furniture dolly and hope for the best. That's how you end up with cracked tile in an entryway, a gouge across a hardwood floor, or a safe stuck halfway down the stairs. The equipment makes more difference than most people think.
Gun safes aren't shaped like anything else we move. They're tall, narrow, and top-heavy, so they tip easily. A regular appliance dolly isn't enough. Here's what we bring:
- A heavy-duty dolly rated for 1,200 pounds and up, with ratchet straps that lock the safe to the frame
- Shoulder-strap harnesses for tight hallways where a dolly won't fit or turn
- Moving blankets and corner protectors for the safe's finish and your walls and trim
- Plywood sheets when tile, carpet edges, or thresholds need protection from the dolly wheels
We also match the truck to the safe. Most safes go up a ramp into a regular moving truck, with the crew and straps controlling them the whole way. An extremely large, heavy safe may need a truck with a hydraulic liftgate. When that's the safest way to do it, we arrange the liftgate truck and include it in your quote, so you know before moving day. We've even used one to get a safe off a truck it was loaded onto by forklift, backing up to that truck, moving the safe across, and lowering it to the ground.
The Arizona summer is a factor, too. Metal dollies and straps get hot enough to burn your hands, and hot concrete softens rubber tires. In summer, we usually schedule safe moves for early morning, so the equipment works right and the crew stays safe.
You don't need to know any of this. We already know what your move needs. Want the details on how your safe move will go? Call for a free quote, and we'll walk you through it.
Getting Your Home Ready for Moving Day
A good gun safe move doesn't take much prep. Most safe moves don't get stuck on the safe itself. They get stuck on a narrow hallway, an entryway, a door, or a floor, especially in older homes near Sam Hughes and the university.
Here's our checklist before the crew arrives:
- Clear the path. Move furniture, shoes, and toys out of the way between the safe and the door. It makes the job safer and faster.
- Empty the safe. Take out guns, ammunition, documents, and valuables. An empty safe is much safer to move, and it protects what's inside. If you have kids at home, it's a good time to review the safe storage tips from Project ChildSafe before everything goes back in at the new house.
- Measure your doorways, so you know whether the safe will fit. If a door has to come off to get the safe through, we can take it off and put it back.
- Note any steps, slopes, or obstacles between the safe and the truck, so the crew arrives with the right gear.
- Tell us ahead of time if the safe is going onto tile or wood, so we bring floor protection when it's required.
Is the safe bolted to the floor or wall? Mention it when you book. Unbolting can take extra time and tools, and it's better to plan for it than to find out with the crew standing in front of the safe.
We can move a safe on a hot day, but if it's in a garage with no AC, we'll try to move it early in the morning. Nobody wants to drag 800 pounds of steel around in the Tucson sun.
You don't have to do anything special to the safe. Just tell us what to expect, and we'll take it from there. Want us to see it first? We do quotes online and in person.
